New HV Parking and Rest Stop

Location: Kambalda WA
Client: Main Roads WA
Duration December 2021 to May 2022
Contract Type: Lump Sum

Project Background:
In December 2021, CareyMC was awarded the work order to construct a heavy vehicle parking bay just outside of Kambalda. Although the project was relatively small in scale, being a parking bay, it involved many aspects of typical road construction, including:

  • Embankment Foundation Earthworks
  • Drainage
  • Pavement Construction
  • Sealing
  • Signs and Lines

Due to the site’s geometry and drainage requirements, the embankment for the bay was built up by 1.3 meters, necessitating the import of 22,000 tonnes of gravel from the Spargoville pit.

Project Challenges:

  • COVID-19 Precautions:
The project was delivered during a time when COVID-19 was prevalent in the community, requiring the team to take relevant precautions.
  • Kambalda to Esperance Gas Pipeline:
The gas pipeline ran through the middle of the work area, requiring inspectors to be present when working within a 10-meter proximity of the line, and imposing restrictions on compaction activities.

Key Achievements:

  • Aboriginal Engagement:
The work order included specific KPIs around Aboriginal engagement, which were significantly exceeded:
    • Aboriginal Employment:
      • Target: 10%
      • Project Delivered: 40.9%
    • Engagement of Aboriginal Business:
      • Target: 10%
      • Project Delivered: 50.1%
  • Safety and Quality Compliance:
All critical safety and quality requirements were successfully met during the project.
