Corrosion remediation to structural steelwork in an aggressive island environment
Location: West Island and Home Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, IOT
Client: Jones Lang LaSalle (WA)
Duration: June – July 2019 & January 2020
Contract Type: Lump Sum
A condition assessment on the external steelwork at both the Home Island and West Island schools identified significant areas requiring corrosion remediation. Given Carey’s knowledge of corrosion remediation in aggressive environments, combined with the history of delivering successful projects on
the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Carey was awarded the contract to complete blasting and painting works at both campuses, including repairs and modifications to structures as required.
The full scope involved:
- Fabricate and install new structural steel members where corrosion was found to be severe
- Fabricate and install new downpipes and drainage arrangements for the Home Island campus
- Abrasive blast and paint nominated structural steel
Due to the nature of the works and the locations within school campuses, the works needed to be scheduled during holiday periods when students and staff were absent. Carey met the tight target completion dates with the new school terms commencing without interruption.
Carey strives to engage as many local people as possible when working in places like the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and is proud to report that 77.5% of the project workforce were local residents.
The works were successfully completed and Practical Completion was issued in February2020.
