Providing Tourism Facilities and Safe Vessel Access for the Tiwi Islanders

Carey’s involvement with this project dates back to 2016, at which time budgeting and constructability advice was provided to Tiwi Enterprise to assist them to secure funding for their desire to have a safe method of boarding and disembarking from the Darwin ferry service and associated passenger terminal
building. In mid-2018 with funding secured, Tiwi Enterprise and Carey entered into an ECI contract to
oversee the design and development of the project. With the project proposal developed, the relationship then progressed into a lump sum contract for the delivery of a visitor’s centre and two ferry landings one on each side of the Apsley Strait.
The construction scope involved:
- Construction of the new visitors centre building (steel frame and clad structure) Necessary water, sewer, and power upgrades and connection to new building Fabrication of steel berthing pontoons and aluminium access platforms
- Installation of the structure including of steel piles and prefabricated structures to form the two new berths on Bathurst and Melville Island
Key Project Outcomes:
- Development and delivery of a key community infrastructure project by two Indigenous owned businesses; Tiwi Enterprise and Carey.
- 75% of the contract value was delivered locally by Northern Territory businesses.
- 30% of manhours and over $1M of services provided by Tiwi Islander and Tiwi Island businesses.
- Training to local Tiwi people – over the duration of the works, 10 local Tiwi Islanders completed a number of upskilling courses including Working at Heights and Working in Confined Spaces.
The official opening of the facility attended by Senator Sam McMahon was held on the 30th January 2020.
