Cocos Playgroup- Asbestos Removal

Assisting with the remediation of a key community space

Following the successful delivery of the Australian Federal Police building works on Cocos (Keeling) Islands for our client JLL, Carey was engaged to remediate the playpark for the local playgroup on West Island of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. The playpark had been shut down for over 12 months due to contamination of the sandpit with Asbestos Containing Material (ACM).

An environmental consultancy group was engaged by the client to develop a practical remediation plan that would allow the playpark to be reopened and used. The remediation solution nominated by the client was to screen the material to less than 7mm.

Scope of Work:

Carey, utilizing its Restricted Asbestos Licence, devised and implemented a regimented health, safety, and environmental plan to control the associated risks. Carey adopted a mobile screening method to process the ACM, involving the attachment of an engineered screen bucket to a bobcat. The screen allowed for multiple apertures to first screen at less than 25mm and then at less than 7mm.

Full Scope Involved:

  • Excavating 300m³ of material from the playpark
  • Screening 300m³ with 25mm and 7mm screens to remove ACM
  • Installing Geotextile for separation layer
  • Replacing with 300m³ of clean fill
  • Installing a new perimeter fence for the playpark
  • Installing a new shade sail structure

Due to the potential risks associated with handling asbestos, Carey implemented stringent safety measures throughout the project.

Project Completion:
The works were successfully completed, and Practical Completion was issued in April 2019.
