Demolition and Replacement of Ship Fender Systems at a working port
Location: Fremantle Port
Client: Fremantle Port Authority
Duration July to October 2023
Contract Type: Lump Sum
The fender system at H Berth had reached the end of its life, becoming outdated and damaged. Carey was awarded the tender to remove the redundant system and replace it with a new, modern fender system.
Scope of Work:
- Removal:
- Removal of the existing steel pylon fender system
- Installation:
- Tie-in of the new fender support to the existing concrete deck
- Operational Considerations:
- Working around a live port, ensuring the protection of ships and mooring lines during demolition
- Adhering to tight timelines during port shutdowns and between shipping schedules
Innovative Techniques:
Carey employed several innovative techniques on this project to improve efficiency and reduce risk:
- Hydro-Demolition Robot:
Used to remove selected areas of concrete without damaging the reinforcing structures - Mobile Booth:
Erection of a mobile booth to contain demolition activities and protect ships in berth - Mobile Counter-Weight Scaffolds:
Temporary supports that can be easily moved when ships need to berth
Several of these initiatives have now become standard practice at Fremantle Port.
Key Achievement:
This project is a strong example of Carey’s ability to deliver technically complex work in challenging environments, adhering to demanding schedules and site constraints.
