After Carey successfully installed new toilet facilities to both campuses of the Cocos Islands school, the existing toilets were no longer required. Carey was contracted to turn the asbestos contaminated toilets into storerooms.
The scope of works included:
- Mobilising freight to island
- The decommissioning of the existing services and removal of all fittings and fixtures
- The safe removal of all asbestos materials in the linings of walls and ceilings
- Removal of the existing tiled floor and installation of new coved vinyl flooring
- Installation of new wall and ceilings and solid core doors
- Paint throughout
The client utilised Carey’s remote region experience and experience in the successful and safe removal of asbestos to mobilise and provide a fast turnaround solution, so there was adequate storage space for the schools.
As always, Carey engaged as many local people as possible, while also bringing in specialised trades as required to complete the project to a high standard, resulting in a favourable outcome for all stakeholders.
Due to the potential risks associated with handling asbestos, Carey implemented a regulated HSE plan to control these risks.
