A new industrial plant to service WA’s road infrastructure needs

Project Overview:
To better service the Western Australian market, Sami Bitumen Technologies, a member of the French Colas Group of Companies, required a second import and processing terminal in the Fremantle Ports area to support its existing operations in North Fremantle. Following an open competitive tender process, Carey was awarded the contract to manage the construction of civil infrastructure and buildings at the new Kwinana site.

Project Details:
Over 1,000m³ of concrete was poured as part of the project, with Carey staff assisting the design consultants and the owner in resolving and rationalizing constructability details to reduce the overall concrete requirements. The project also provided an opportunity for the further development of Indigenous participation, with one of our Indigenous trainee laborers advancing his career through funding for a non-slewing crane operator license.
Scope of Works:
- Asbestos Management:
- Management of Asbestos Contaminated Materials (ACM) present on the site.
- Underground Services:
- Installation of underground service culverts, conduits, and draw pits.
- Site Drainage:
- Construction of a site drainage system, including infiltration ponds, flush pits, manholes, and pipework.
- Concrete and Structural Work:
- Construction of concrete foundations, slabs, and bund walls.
- Fabrication and installation of loading gantry steelwork.
- Building Construction:
- Construction and fit-out of the mechanical control center building.
Project Significance:
This multifaceted civil infrastructure project allowed Carey to demonstrate its capabilities in managing complex projects, with disciplines ranging from earthmoving, concrete, and steel construction to HVAC, electrical, and plumbing installations. The project also highlighted Carey’s commitment to Indigenous engagement in the civil and construction sectors, promoting the upskilling and career development of Indigenous workers.
